• Blog – What do you make of the last chapter? Is this a happy ending for Huck and Jim?

The last chapter is a happy ending for Huck and Jim. It is a happy ending for Huck when the reader learns that Tom is now well and wears his bullet around his neck. For Jim, he becomes free. This chapter takes the novel back to the beginnings of the story when Aunt Sally tries to “sivilize” Huck. The last chapter could be hinting at yet another adventure for Huck when he announces that he will continue to try and avoid the trappings of civilization and find his own freedom.

yes in that sense of the ending it is happy. but over all do you think that it is good that after all that work going down river and making up all of those stories, that they are all right back where they started.

Good job Michael. I didn't think about the fact that the book is kind of setting up another adventure for Huck because he wants to get away from civilization, I didn't really realize that, but that is a great point. I do think that it is happy in some aspects that you discussed, such as Jim being free and Tom getting better. Good Job

I also didn't think about the "setting up of another adventure." Maybe another one of Twain's stories could be considered a continuation of this plot, in terms of having the same morals and such.

One has to take into consideration the aspect of the allegory of slavery. On the surface, yes, it is a happy ending, but underneath we see Huck revert back to the mod mentality and Jim being forgotten about. This is a play on slavery and the rise of slave/black prejudice.

When i imagine a happy ending i image one that has everyone getting the best thing they can possibly be getting. But for Huck he only goes back to how he was in the beginning of the book. This, maybe for the time, a happy ending but overall he is still running from civilization and the dangerous adventures, the lying, and the running into strange people will just continue.
